Living about 100 metres from the beach in Hervey Bay has it's rewards. Besides the obvious benefits, you don't have to walk far to throw in a line.
Fishing is one of Hervey Bay's greatest attractions and one of its great strengths is
the diversity. Shore fish the calm waters
from the sandy beaches, cast a line at
Gataker's Bay for a nice Bream, or try
your hand at fishing from one of the many piers and
jetties, particularly the famous Urangan
Pier.
You can go beach or rock fishing on Fraser Island, fish deep sea or off the continental shelf, chase a
wide range of fish species in the creeks and rivers of the Great Sandy Strait or one of the
four Burrum rivers, fish the straight itself, try both the deep and shallow reefs and ledges in Bay waters,
or even go fresh water fishing at nearby Lenthals Dam.
Fish
from your own boat or try one of the many
local fishing charter boats such as Time n Tide
Charters or Hervey Bay mv DayTripper.

Summer
Whiting
|
| One
of the most sought after fish in Hervey

Slightly
smaller than the Summer Whiting but

March and July during the day at the
middle of the tide. Best spots are
Gatakers' Bay, Dundowran Beach, Toogoom
and Burrum Heads, and west side of Woody
Island.

yabbies or worms. |
| |

|

called tarwhine. Found throughout the
Hervey Bay region and common at Gataker's
Bay on the ledges, Pt. Vernon , The
Urangan Pier close to the pylons, and
River Heads is best between May and

best times to fish for Bream.

gut. |
| |

all year round and most usually from the
Urangan Pier close to the beach or on the
sandspit for an hour or so after high
tide. Best fished with flyhooks and a
float when the water is clear.
Bait:
Yabbies, prawns, dough mix
|
| |
Flathead
|
Caught
all year round in both shallow and deep
water. Main catches between

afternoon seems best. Large fish
are generally female and should be
released. They can be found almost
everywhere and often caught from the
sandbanks and first gutter at the Urangan
Pier.

Live baits, live herring, live pike, lures, pilchards, strip baits,
hardy heads |
| |
Mackerel
|
There
are number of mackerel species common to
Hervey Bay waters including the School
Mackerel, The Broad Barred Mackerel and
the odd Spanish Mackerel. They are a good
fighting fish and a good eating. Usually
caught between September and May from
Gatakers Bay, Pt Vernon, River Heads and
the Urangan Pier. (If you catch a Spanish
Mackerel, care should be taken with
Ciguatera Poisoning).
Bait: Pilchard,
Squid, Live Pike and Herring. |
| |
Golden
Trevally
|
| A
good fighting fish most often seen between
October and March. Best fished during the
day on the middle of the tide. Urangan
Pier is a good place to catch Trevally but
beware of getting tangled around the
pylons. Also found outside the Boat
Harbour and north end of Woody Island.
Bait:
Live bait, Live herring, small pike,
squid, garfish, hardy heads.

Other
Species
|
Queenfish
are found between October and May, Turrum
are often caught from the Urangan Pier,
and Yellowtail Kingfish are seen in the
warmer months. Tuna, Jewfish, Cod, Coral
trout and Parrot fish have all been taken
from the Urangan Pier - in fact all the
species above can be caught in and around
Hervey Bay waters without having to climb
into a boat - of course it helps having a
lengthy pier. If you have access to a
boat, nearby reef fishing is excellent.
