Be Dingo-Safe

Be Dingo Smart
Dingo Safe

<< Back to dingo main page

In the past, some dingoes have been destroyed because other visitors have not always been Dingo-Safe! Dingoes around camp sites have learnt to scavenge for food, expecting hand-outs from visitors or stealing from picnic tables and tents. In their continual search for food, dingoes might harass you or your child, or attack your tent.

By being Dingo-Safe! you can help dingoes remain one of Fraser Island’s natural treasures.

How to be Dingo-Safe!
  • Always stay close to your children

  • Walk in small groups

  • Watch dingoes quietly from a distance
    - don’t encourage, excite or coax them.

  • Look out for dingoes - stay calm.

  • NEVER feed dingoes directly or indirectly

  • Lock up your food stores and iceboxes.

  • Pack away your food scraps.

  • Keep fish and bait off the ground.

  • Make your tent boring for dingoes
    - keep your belongings safe.

  • Tell others how to be Dingo-Smart!

Dingoes have become threatening because people
have not been careful with food scraps and stores.
DO NOT FEED THE DINGOES !

Be Dingo-Safe

Be Dingo Aware
Anywhere on Fraser Island, on public or private land, it is an offence to feed a dingo, attract it using food or food waste, or disturb it in any way. Maximum penalty $3000. On-the-spot fines of $225 apply.

If you feel threatened by a dingo
Dingoes on Fraser Island have become accustomed to interacting with humans but they are a wild animal and therefore unpredictable. If you feel threatened by a dingo;
  • Stand up at your full height
  • Face the dingo
  • Fold your arms and keep eye contact
  • If in pairs, stand back to back
  • Calmly back away
  • Confidently call for help
  • Do not run or wave your arms
